Bendsneyder started by setting pole position and went on to be the top rider in both races. He won a hard fought victory in Saturday’s race, holding off Oscar Gutierrez of Spain and 17-year-old Australian Olly Simpson. But although he set a blistering pace in the early laps he was never able to shake off his opponents completely in the opening round.
Even going into the final lap of Saturday’s race, it was not settled until the Dutch rider took the flag. “It was a great race, I tried to get away at the front but it just wasn’t possible, too easy for the others to hang in my slipstream,” he commented.
Japan’s Kaito Toba and Fabio Giannantonio, who finished 4-5 were also major players in Saturday’s race.
Then on Sunday it was confident Bendsneyder who took to the circuit and while the Australian Olly Simpson got away well at the start the Dutch rider was quick to take control of the race. He rode with style and rhythm and put in consistently fast lap times to build on his lead at the front.
While Bendsneyder took a second confident win, there was a major scrap for the minor places behind him between some seven riders in the closing stage of the race. It was Italian Fabio Giannantonio who finally took second and Simpson picked up his second podium third, but not after two Japanese riders Kaito Toba and Ayumu Sasaki collided going into the final corner and took themselves out of contention.
The Cup returns to Assen for the next two rounds on June 26-27.
